Energy Efficient & Water-wise Truck Centre Saves up to 14 litres per Staff Member a Day |

Use of new technology and design expertise has enabled Brisbane Isuzu to implement industry-leading environmentally-friendly initiatives at its new Burpengary truck centre.
According to Brisbane Isuzu Group Service manager, Peter Kenny, the environmental footprint of the centre had been reduced significantly from its predecessor at Archerfield, which had also benefitted from significant eco-initiatives in the past five years.
Mr Kenny said one example was a staggering reduction in use of town water, by capturing the run-off from the enormous 6,000 m2 steel roof, the centre will use town water only for drinking and washing hands.
“The rain water will be used for everything from washing the trucks and engines down, through to flushing toilets,” Mr Kenny said.
“We have a 400,000 litre storage tank at the rear of the building, and 100,000 litres at the front. Given that it is estimated that office staff generally use on average 16 litres of water a day, we estimate we can cut this down to around two litres a day.”
Other features relate to saving of energy use in heating and lighting.
“We are particularly pleased with the designs we have incorporated to reduce energy use in lighting and heating,” Mr Kenny said.
“We will recover heat from workshop air compressor to heat hot water storage system, therefore reducing electricity to supply of hot water service. This is a Kaiser heat recovery system that will recover 72% of the energy generated from the compressor and converted to produce hot water for cleaning vehicles.
“In addition, lighting systems using T5 28 watt technology with electronic ballast instead of iron core, all lighting areas are motion sensor activated which reduces electricity consumption considerably, and light reflective concrete flooring in workshop, reducing the requirement for consistent overhead lighting.”
“We are conscious that our industry is able to continuously develop ways of helping Australia reduce its carbon emissions as well as saving precious water, and our new facility is a great example of design excellence contributing to environmental stewardship.”
Other environmentally-friendly initiatives at the Burpengary centre include:
- Triple interceptor waste separator;
- Swipe card key tagged switches used in customer lounge and bedrooms for activation of lighting and air-conditioning;
- Smart wiring technology (wireless) for all data systems in the workshop;
- Hot water system in lounge areas and washroom areas are activated by motion sensors, reducing power consumption;
- Outdoor security lighting activated by sensors;
- North South position to capture cross ventilation and to reduce heating and cooling;
- Angle design of sales showroom front glass to dramatically reduce the amount of heat and glare produced from afternoon sun, reducing electricity costs for air-conditioning;
- Smart storage and recovery for all recyclable materials such as oil and paper.
